Leave and Cleave

Question: I would like your perspective on a situation involving a girlfriend and boyfriend, in which the boyfriend would let his mother come between them in their relationship. I don't know if the boyfriend was putting God as #1 in his life, but it seemed like he needed to leave his mother and cleave to the girlfriend, or, am I wrong in thinking this?
